Overview

Mayotte is a French overseas department located in the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It consists of the main island, Grande-Terre, and a smaller island, Petite-Terre, as well as several islets. While geographically part of the Comoros, Mayotte opted to remain under French administration in the 1970s and officially became an overseas department in 2011.
