In a country where almost half of the population is employed in the agricultural sector, the consequences of climate change are set to be devastating. To prevent the climate crisis from affecting the most vulnerable communities in Tajikistan, Alliance2015’s members Helvetas and Welthungerhilfe have kickstarted a project to develop options and solutions that enhance the climate resilience of people and ecosystems, thereby developing pathways for their climate resilient development.

The goal of the project, that is expected to finish in 2027, is to enhance opportunities for green development in the food – water – energy – environment nexus. This project is predicted to set a precedent of climate resilient development for Tajikistan: documented, proven and innovative solutions in the fields of livelihood diversification, regenerative agriculture and renewable energy serve to inform the policy dialogue at the national level.

Tajiks living in the area bordering the Nature Reserve “Tigrovaya Balka” are the beneficiaries of these activities. Alliance2015 also plans to provide assistance in the Southern Khatlon region (Dusti, Jayhun, Qubodiyon districts and the peri-urban area around the oblast capital Bokthar), a densely populated rural area where cotton, horticulture, and animal husbandry are the basis of people’s livelihoods.

The project is cofounded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Coordination.
