Overview
The Central African Republic (CAR) is a landlocked country embarking on a long path to recovery.
It is one of the poorest and most fragile countries in the world despite its abundant natural resources (470 mineral occurrences, with oil, gold and diamonds having the greatest potential).
For more than a decade, the Central African Republic has been suffering the consequences of a multidimensional crisis resulting from recurrent shocks linked to armed violence, institutional fragility, structural poverty, and extreme weather hazards.
Although the security and humanitarian situation is relatively better in some areas in 2025, a large part of the population remains exposed to these shocks, leading to vulnerabilities and humanitarian needs. About 2.3 million people or 36 per cent of the population will be even more vulnerable in 2026, to the point that humanitarian assistance alone will not be sufficient to restore their well-being.
