Welthungerhilfe

Welthungerhilfe was founded as the National Committee for the Freedom from Hunger Campaign, of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), in 1962.

Today, Welthungerhilfe is one of the biggest private development organisations in Germany. The organisation - also known as German Agro Action (GAA) - is non-profit, non-political and non-denominational. An honorary board oversees its operations and the sitting German President is our patron.

Our work is financed by public donations and grants from the German government, the European Union and United Nations' agencies. Welthungerhilfe currently operates in 48 countries worldwide, in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Eastern Europe. Total turnover in 2006 was 175,5 million Euro, including private donations totaling Euro 34,7 million.

Those at the bottom of the socio-economic ladder are our principal target groups: the landless, small farmers, women, children and youth.

We also work to offset the worst effects of humanitarian emergencies, whether they are manmade or the result of natural disasters. Our staff in Germany and overseas ensures the professional and efficient implementation of our programmes, especially those relating to rural development, food security, water supply, emergency aid, rehabilitation and the promotion of small enterprise. DWHH works at home and abroad to promote human rights, sustainable development, food security and the preservation of the environment.
