Six of Alliance2015's seven members were part of the humanitarian response to the Nepal earthquakes, i.e. ACTED (France), Cesvi (Italy), Concern Worldwide (Ireland), HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation (Switzerland), People in Need (Czech Republic) and Welthungerhilfe (Germany). They were able to respond quickly and effectively thanks to coordination and mutual support on the ground.

In the early days, the above members coordinated daily, with HELVETAS's office at the centre of the coordination efforts helping the emergency personnel from other Alliance2015 members to find their way in heavily disrupted Kathmandu and other affected districts. Coordination also meant that the members who had access to tarpaulins and other relief items shared them with other Alliance2015 members to accelerate distribution.

Furthermore, the members shared the information on reliable suppliers and coordinated the ways in which they worked with partners. HELVETAS had a very strong presence and development programme in Nepal but limited emergency relief capacity, and worked closely with the members who came to support the emergency response but had limited knowledge of the area. Quickly the government assigned areas to the INGOs and the coordination efforts focused on the means of facilitating/accelerating access to relief goods and reaching difficult-to-access places.

Since the earthquakes, the members have supported the affected communities in 14 districts and will continue to support most of them in the coming months with their work focusing on reconstruction and building resilience.
