Alliance2015 & The Fight against HIV&AIDS
AIDS is wiping out generations and devastating the lives of young people and children. By the end of 2007, there were 33.2 million people globally living with HIV&AIDS, 60% of them in Africa, where just over 10% of the world population lives. Every day, over 8,000 people die and over 14,000 people are newly infected with HIV - silent monthly tsunamis.
Alliance2015 has made HIV&AIDS one of its focus issues and its members support over 153 AIDS programmes in 42 countries with a volume of about 20 mio. Euro. The majority of the projects are in Africa, where AIDS is hitting the hardest and access to medicines and care has not been a priority of most governments. Some examples of Alliance members' work include:
- At the St. AlbertDistrictHospital in Zimbabwe, CESVI provides AIDS medicines to pregnant women to reduce the transmission of HIV to their babies. After launching the programme in 2004, the number of pregnant women taking an AIDS test increased by 200% within three months.
- In South Africa, the Treatment Action Campaign (a local counterpart of Hivos), working together with rural doctors, has ensured that AIDS medicines reach 42,000 people in the public sector compared to 27,000 the previous year.
- Good nutrition is essential for HIV positive people to help boost weak immune systems. Concern has undertaken operational research to develop and promote so-called Ready to Use Therapeutic Foodfor people living with HIV in poor communities in Malawi and Haiti.
- In Burkina Faso Welthungerhilfe works to raise HIV&AIDS awareness and provides crucial support for AIDS orphans and the families of HIV-positive people. Over 500 orphans are assisted to ensure they can complete their education.
- In northern Namibia, Ibis, People In Need and Hivos work with over 900 volunteers to provide home based care and support for school-going children orphaned by AIDS.
The harmonisation of AIDS prevention activities increases their effectiveness. In the ZambeziaProvince (Mozambique), Alliance2015 members have pooled resources to work with the local government and NGO partners. The joint project aims at improving the quality of prevention and care, promotes positive living and behaviour change, and works to strengthen the rights of people living with HIV.
Additionally to implementing projects in the affected countries, Alliance2015 does advocacy and awareness-raising work and participated in the International AIDS Conference in Toronto in August 2006 and at the World Social Forum in Nairobi in January 2007. The fight against HIV&AIDS requires a concerted effort at local, national and international levels. The strong projects with local partners in the South give Alliance2015 credibility for their work in the North.
